Aloha Friday: Revisiting the TV Shows of our Youth
Recently, NHL has discovered the wonder that is 80’s TV shows. I put The Super Mario Brothers Super Show and Inspector Gadget on the Roku and NHL just loved them. He loved cheering for Mario as he became “super” (complete with cheesy, oh-so-80’s rhyme: “Star light, star bright, give me pasta power, give me pasta might!”) and kicked King Koopa’s keister. Even more than that, though, he loved the antics of a certain bionic inspector, his neice and their dog. Even JSL got in on the fun, shouting “go go” when he saw Gadget coming on.
On the flip side, I decided to watch a favorite of mine when I was a kid: Voltron. I got through the first three episodes (the ones that introduce the team, Voltron, etc), but there were so many plot holes an inconsistencies that I just couldn’t continue. From everyone knowing so much about Voltron, yet claiming that it was something few knew, to the invaded planet having the keys to a powerful weapon (Voltron) yet not using them until the Galaxy Alliance pilots arrived. There definitely a nostaglia factor involved in my still liking it, but I have to admit that the show just wouldn’t stand up were it premiering today.
My Aloha Friday question is: What shows from your youth would you want to introduce your kids to? What shows from your youth might you steer them away from?
Thanks to Kailani at An Island Life for starting this fun for Friday. Please be sure to head over to her blog to say hello and sign the MckLinky there if you are participating.
Aloha #9
hubster and i love classic shows, such as scoob-doo, tom & jerry, smurfs, flintstones, etc., so we have introduced our kiddo to the Boomerang channel for these classics. we also bought speed racer season 1 on DVD. big hit. aloha and take care.
I agree with GG. I miss the classic cartoons. They’re nothing like what’s on today.

Great question! I miss so many shows, but off the top of my head I think my kids would LOVE Punky Brewster, LOL.

Does it count that I used to watch older shows from my mom’s youth? I loved Gidget. I only have boys but I am gonna make them sit through a few episodes anyway!
I would love to introduce my daughter to Punky Brewster.
I loved Saved By The Bell, Flinstones and Smurfs.

here I will show my age. “Mr Ed” the talking horse. My daughter really liked that show. We all watched the reruns together.”Leave it to beaver” was another favorite

Ooh! My son would LOVE Inspector Gadget! I’ll have to see if I can find it on YouTube. I recently introduced my kids to The Wuzzles, which was a very cute cartoon for younger kids. All the animals are half-and-half, like BumbleLion (half bumble bee, half lion) or Hoppopotamus (half hippo, half rabbit). It’s so cute and way better than I expected it to be. I can’t think of any that I wouldn’t let them watch right now.

I agree with the others…there were such great cartoons when I was a kid…Flintstones, Smurfs, Tom & Jerry. I think some shows that my girls watch today are great, but there’s something to be said for cute shows that are just meant to entertain.

What is a little ironic is that my kids ages 8 and 5 really love Tom and Jerry. My youngest was home yesterday and thank goodness for Tom and Jerry on demand! I used to watch Land of the Lost….remember that one? I think my kids would love it.
Any of the cartoons would be great…
As for Punky Brewster…
I have it on DVD!
(but I do not think my son would like it!)
I would love to show the boys Muppet Babies. I loved that and think they would too.
We have introduced all kinds of toons from the day – Gummy Bears, She-Ra/He-man, Gargoyles. We are so retro, that my daughter is going to be Smurfette for Halloween – I had to make her costume, since they don’t mass produce it.

Punky Brewster! And luckily, my darling husband bought me the first 2 seasons on DVD:-) also Doogie Howser, I love that show. I agree with the Angel, too, I loved Muppet Babies. Is that on DVD? I’ll have to check….

I loved the Flintstones, the Roadrunner, the Jetsons, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and friends. But I HATED the Smurfs. They’re from my daughter’s generation and she loved them. I wish Captain Kangaroo had been available when she was small. I remember how much I loved it.

This is a great question!
I would love to see my kids’ reaction to Happy Days. I don’t know what I’d steer them away from though. I watched pretty wholesome stuff.

I would want them to see American Band Stand. The shows of my youth were pretty mild so I think they all would be ok for kids.

I’m all about the Jetsons but hated the Flinstones. Saved By The Bell is a must-see, too.

No Three’s Company, lol but yes to Bugs Bunny!
We’ve got a channel that’s been showing shows like “The A Team”, “Starsky and Hutch”, “Emergency”, and “Adam-12”. My 13-yr-old son thinks they are hilarious. The younger two boys, not so much. For a laugh I’d love to show them “The Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island”. My dad was totally addicted to those shows and if we wanted to watch TV those nights, that’s what we watched!
