Aloha Friday: Tracing Your Family’s History

Yesterday, I wrote about my budding interest in genealogy. I’ve begun the process of tracing both my and B’s family trees. One of my mother’s family members traced their ancestry awhile back. (I plan on incorporating this into my tree.) He uncovered quite a few interesting stories including an ancestor of mine who had a ticket to go on the Titanic. Fortunately, he missed the boat (though I’m sure it didn’t seem like a good thing when it happened).

My Aloha Friday question for this week is: Have you traced your family tree? If so, have you come upon any interesting stories about your ancestors?

Thanks to Kailani at An Island Life for starting this fun for Friday. Please be sure to head over to her blog to say hello and sign the MckLinky there if you are participating.

  • Genealogy is very important to our family. We’re constantly searching and tracing our ancestors. It is so very interesting and fulfilling! Good Luck! I’ve hit a few (many) dead ends but I keep searching.

  • Not yet. I don’t know if I have hit the right age yet… seems to be something that hits around 40+ in my family. i.e. turn 40, don’t buy sports car… just research roots.

  • I haven’t traced our fam tree, but my aunt did a while ago. We have a great great great grandma who was full Cherokee. Another thing that is just horribly racist, in my opinion, is that my Aunt traced our roots back to an African-American woman. When she asked my Great Aunts about her, they said they would never ever talk about it. So, that pretty much killed the genealogy search for her. It’s a big mystery to us, though, and we often wonder about it.

  • I have done some. Before my Mom passed on, we met some long lost family members on her side. it was really nice because her father who was killed in the line of duty in 1962. died not knowing where his brother was. She got to see them before her death. and I will tell you her cousin looked like her.. they could have been brother and sister!

  • I haven’t but would love to – wouldn’t really know how to go about it, though. I don’t think I would have the patience – I just wish someone would do it for me, LOL! Have you watched that tv show where they have a celebrity trace their roots to find out where they came from? It’s pretty good, I think it’s on Friday nights on NBC…not sure

    Have a nice weekend

    @Roxanne D.
Do you have any information about her? Name, approximate year of birth, location? If so, you might be able to find some information on Ancestry.com. (I’ll be posting a review of Ancestry in a week or so.) You can search for free, though you’ll need an actual account to view the information.

We watch that show, Who Do You Think You Are, every week. I mentioned it yesterday as one of the major reasons behind my recent genealogy kick.

  • One of my Great Aunt’s did a whole Family Tree book a few years back – I’m still trying to get my hands on a copy of it so I can find out even more interesting details of our ancestry and maybe expound on it. 🙂

  • I always wanted to. My family comes from Eastern Europe where I was born so I wonder how difficult it would be. My hubs cousins traced his family tree all the way to Italy when they were making family book for the upcoming reunion….it was neat to read all that.

  • I personally have not. Someone on each my mom’s & dad’s sides have been doing it for years.

We have been watching Who Do You Think You Are and love it.

  • no I haven’t!! Maybe I will too!!!Aloha!!!

  • I haven’t really done this but I tried once and my grandmother was an orphan so it was hard to get past that. I find it interesting, I’ve just not put the effort into it.

  • I love watching that ancestry show on tv. My hubby’s family has been traced back to William the Conquerer.

    Have a great day!

  • I don’t know my natural father, so have thought about tracing him and his relatives, but decided not to, as he knows I exist and hasn’t shown an interest, so why should I?
