Aloha Friday: Superheroes
Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day. This is when comic book stores across North America give away select comic books for free. We went last year and the boys had a blast collecting and then reading through the comic books.
This year, will be a bit more complicated. B’s going to meet someone for lunch tomorrow. This means she’ll be out for most of the time that Free Comic Book Day runs. The complication is that I don’t usually drive on Saturdays for religious reasons. My geekiness (“must take boys for free comic books”) is battling my religious side (“must observe Shabbat”). Who will win? To be honest, I still don’t know.
Meanwhile, I’ve been introducing my boys to various superheroes. They love the Avengers (Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Ant Man, Wasp, Thor, Black Panther and Hawkeye), Young Justice (Robin, Superboy, Miss Martian, Kid Flash and Aqualad) and Batman on the TV. They have also been introduced to the Green Lantern. My boys just love superheroes and would love to pour through new comic books. Somehow I’ll have to make this work for them.
My Aloha Friday question for today is: Who is your favorite superhero and why?
Thanks to Kailani at An Island Life for starting this fun for Friday. Please be sure to head over to her blog to say hello and sign the McLinky there if you are participating.
Aloha #86
Green Lantern was my first super-hero; I remember getting comics with my grandfather (he’d take me on a walk to the corner store in Key West and buy me a comic and a soda) and Green Lantern was the first super-hero comic I read. And that was my spring-board to other superheroes – I realised that GL was in the Justice League, so I started reading that, and from there, the Superman, Wonder Woman, and other titles featuring the members… and that included my all-time favourite superhero…
The Batman. I think, as a child, I liked him most because he had no powers, just really cool toys. As I got older, into my teens, the cool factor was very important, but still – he was a mortal. In my opinion, it’s not particularly heroic to fight bad guys when you’re near-indestructible (say, Superman or even Wonder Woman.) Sure, Batman’s got all the toys, but he’s still a mortal – a well placed punch by a strong villain can take him out. A ray blast or bullet can seriously hurt him… or even kill him.
And, let’s be honest – as I got older, I appreciated the dark side to The Batman – the dude’s got issues, no, subscriptions! He’s wound tight – too tight, perhaps – and it makes for some great storytelling at times.
So, that’s why The Batman is my favourite superhero.

Hmmm…Back in the late 70’s I like watching Wonder Woman. LOL Now as cheesy as it sounds … my grandkids are my Super Heros. They are growing up in a world that has more turmoil than I think we’re aware of. Life isn’t as simple as it was when I was a kid so … my grandkids are my Super Heros. I hope that makes sense. ;D

I don’t exactly have a favorite superhero….can the Ninja Turtles count? lol
P.S. I go back and forth on the Shabbat dilemmas…and I feel like doing things as a family outweighs not driving, watching tv, etc. But I am also not Orthodox!

I’m not really into superheros but I like watching Batman and Spiderman cartoons when I was younger.
Super Grover- I hope he counts 🙂
@Harriet
Super Grover definitely counts. He’s one of my favorites. I have a figure of him in my office and have toyed with buying this painting for my office: http://www.jameshance.com/images/paintings/steel.jpg
I love Asen Lupin because he is very intelligent and very handsome
