Aloha Friday: Techy Frugality
Though I’m a “techy dad”, I’m also a bit frugal. I don’t buy technology items simply because they exist. Rather, I see if it will be something we will use and whether it is worth the price. For example, I would love to go out and buy an iPad 2. I even feel a bit left out without owning one. However, I just can’t justify spending that kind of money on something that I don’t see the use for. Similarly, we don’t have smart phones as I can’t see spending $30 a month PER PHONE for a data plan. That’s $720 a year that we could use for other things.
(And the fact that I’m posting this days before my birthday isn’t a hint at all. 😉 )
My Aloha Friday question for today is: Is there a piece of technology that you’d love to buy but can’t quite afford?
Thanks to Kailani at An Island Life for starting this fun for Friday. Please be sure to head over to her blog to say hello and sign the linky there if you are participating.

I would like to have a IPAD 2 or a mac airbook.. it’s not really the cost of it but the practicality also as we already have laptops/desktops at home.

An iPad2 is on the list with a mac book pro. The mac book pro would make my life sooooo much easier.
I would love to be able to buy a good digital camera along with Photoshop software

I am leaning toward an eBook, (Nook, Kindle) but have over 80 books on my bookshelves waiting to be read, so I can’t justify the spending of the money for it.

I also would love to own and IPadII or a Backberry Tablet. however I have a kindle and just can not see a need for the others. they is always something newer coming out. So no matter what one chooses, there will be another better one( so they say) out in a week or two. I will wait until I see or have a need for the new technology. Usually it is about one year after it has been around;).

I think I’m good as is. We really have more than we need.
Have a great Friday!

I think I would really like an IPad if someone will teach me how to use it.

Well, the thing about iPads and Ipods and Ixxx, i’m kind of like you and see what i could use them for. Sure, everybody having one makes you feel like an outkast, and if its cost would be ten times cheaper maybe i’d get one just to be able to brag about it. Unfortunately, it has a high price (probably justified) but i have a 22 inch screen on my computer and a 17 inch on my laptop, i like my screen wide and able to contain a large amount of information. This is the same reason why i don’t like using phones to surf the web – it’s a waste of time. Everything i do on a computer i can do five times faster.

Hmmm . . . I can’t really think of anything I want to get. I recently got an iPad2 and Mac Book Pro so I think I’m all set!
Hope you get something great for your birthday! 🙂

You know, it *is* possible to get an iPad 2 without the data plan. I couldn’t justify the data plan when I bought my iPad1 more than a year back, but I use it all the time at home, at Starbucks and other places with free WiFi.
I feel that it was a GREAT purchase… I even use it for school! (college)
