Aloha Friday: My Favorite Non-Conventional Holiday Movie
This time of year, Christmas just seems to take over. Christmas decorations go up in every store. Christmas music blares 24/7 from the radio stations. Television stations trot out the Christmas specials and movies.
Since we celebrate Chanukah, and not Christmas, this XMas overdrive can get tiring quickly. We tend to avoid the stores (admittedly, partly because of the crowds), turn off the radios, and change the channel from the Christmas specials. Once in awhile, we’ll find a Chanukah special, but they are few and far between.
However, in all of this Christmas hoopla, there is actually a Christmas movie that I love: The Nightmare Before Christmas. I just love the tale of Jack Skellington kidnaping Santa Claus (or “Sandy Claws” as Jack calls him) so he can make Christmas in his own image.
Recently, I introduced the boys to this movie. I was apprehensive at first, worrying that they would be scared of Halloween Town’s spooky residents. Instead, my boys were instantly hooked. Since then, we’ve all been singing “The Oogy Boogy Song” as well as the other tunes sung during the movie. I think I’m going to have to buy the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack so we can rock out to it more.
My Aloha Friday question for today is: Do you have a favorite non-conventional holiday movie/special?

I love the Night Before Christmas as well and just about anything else by Tim Burtan. 8 Crazy Nights by Adam Sandler is also very good.
Well, I really like the Holiday shows. although there really aren’t that many to day. I do like the Holiday Inn, a show from the early 50’s.
Hmmm… I’m not sure we have anything nonconventional. We are all about Christmas. 🙂 We do drive four hours to NYC to take the kids to see the “real” Santa at Macy’s on 34th St. I suppose that’s a bit unconventional. :)[[
We love them all – traditional and non traditional. But my favorite of all is the original Scrooge.
There is a movie that I love to watch around this time of year called Joyeux Noel. It’s based on an event that took place Christmas Eve during World War I. Opposing soldiers took it upon themselves to call a temporary cease-fire and got together to celebrate Christmas, knowing that the next day the battle would continue. It’s so moving and I watch it every year.
I love all the Christmas Movies during the Holiday…
We do a ton of Rudolph and other classic videos around here. Secular and fun 😀
I really can’t think of any non-traditional movies but we do like A Christmas Story. You’ll shoot your eye out!
Christmas in our house does not officially start until we have watched Die Hard. By far the best christmas film ever made!
We watch several holiday films every year but our favorite by far is A Christmas Story. My boys loved it and still do! ;D
