Aloha Friday: Yom Kippur and Fasting
This Monday, Jews around the world will celebrate Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. As part of atoning for our sins, we’ll fast during the entire holiday. For the record, that’s 25 hours without food or water. Not even a sip of water to quench our thirst. (Children, nursing mothers, the elderly, people with medical conditions are excused from the fast. Their health is more important than the fast.) Fasting for that long isn’t as hard as it sounds though. You eat dinner the night before, skip breakfast and lunch, and then eat dinner once the fast is over.
My Aloha Friday question is: What is the longest you have fasted for and for what reason?
Thanks to Kailani at An Island Life for starting this fun for Friday. Please be sure to head over to her blog to say hello and sign the MckLinky there if you are participating.
Aloha #6
A true fast would be the 25 hour fasts. The other “fasts” have been when I’m sick, but usually liquid is attempted. Wishing you an easy Fast.

My religious tradition calls for 24 hour fasts once a month. So that’s the longest I’ve gone, barring illness.

Gosh that has got to be hard I couldn’t imagine. I think I only fasted for about 48 hrs due to pregnancy c-section and complications and stuff

I’ve only fasted for stupid diets, and even then never without water. I wish you an easy fast. Happy AF !

Honestly, I guess I have never fasted.

No water? I fasted 14 hours and it was the without liquids part that was very difficult for me and mine was for medical reasons.

I do not remember.. I used to do it often but have not in some time. If I am sick I will not eat. However since I have been diagnosed as Hypoglycemic I can not fast any more.

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever really fasted outside of when I was very sick and stuck in the hospital for a month.

I also fast at Yom Kippur each year so those are my longest fasts. But…a man at our temple almost dropped our Torah at Rosh Hashana and I thought I was going to have to do the 40 day fast (although I don’t know all the details about it)

I never have. I don’t think I could do it!
@Becca,
Glad you didn’t have to fast for 40 days. I did a quick Google search. Torah drop fasts don’t have to be for 40 consecutive days and they are only during the daytime. In addition, there’s a sort of loophole that allows for people to give to charity (Tzedaka) instead of fasting. Good thing too. I don’t think I’d be able to last for 40 days!
My religion also requires fasting but on the once monthly schedule that another blogger mentioned. That & illness are the longest I’ve done too.
Is it in good taste to say “Happy Yom Kippur” to you? If so then I do.
I have fasted for a couple days once to pray for the youth in my area (I was in youthgroup and my youth pastor suggested it, I was so excited to pray for my unsaved friends!)
