Aloha Friday: Kids’ Culinary Excuses

As I posted about in Dear Kid Saturday: Selective Vegetarianism, NHL recently tried to get out of eating a hamburger by claiming that he doesn’t eat animals that he likes. Apparently, he is a big fan of cows because they give us milk. Chickens, on the other hand, have fallen out of favor with NHL and onto his plate.

My Aloha Question for the day is: What culinary excuses have your kids employed to get out of eating their breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Aloha Friday: Recreating #DisneySMMoms Recipes

While we were at Disney Social Media Moms, we were included in a dinner along with 400 volunteers. At the time, we thought that the food that we ate was part of a Robert Irvine/Dinner Impossible challenge. Sadly, it turned out not to be the case. The volunteers got Irvine’s food and we “just” got Disney food. I say “just” because the food was exceptional (as is par for the course at Disney). In fact, having seen what Robert Irvine created, I’m happier with what we were served. Still, it would have been cool to have been part of a Dinner Impossible challenge.

One dessert in particular stood out. It was a warm brownie torte that tasted like it was uncooked warm brownie batter (and I mean that in the best possible way). Here’s a photo, although Disney Food Blog has a better one.

We had gotten a couple plates of these and when the boys (who by this point in the night were exhausted) refused it, I ate the second plate. For some reason, my chocolate-brownie-lust overpowered my brain and I only realized too late that I had eaten B’s plate! I vowed to recreate the dish as soon as I saw how it was made on Dinner Impossible. Of course, once the episode aired, it became apparent that this dish wasn’t part of the show. I’m on my own now in recreating it, though I have a few ideas.

My Aloha Friday question for this week is: Have you ever recreated a dish you’ve eaten out somewhere? If so, how successful were you? If you haven’t, is there a particular dish that you’d love to be able to recreate?

Oh, and if anyone has any pointers for recreating this, I’d be happy to hear them.

Aloha Friday: From Crib To Bunking In A Bed

Before NHL was two, we went for a trip to see some friends in Pennsylvania.  While there, NHL slept in a bed by himself for the first time.  (He was still sleeping in his crib.)  When we got back home, NHL was restless at night.  We quickly figured out that his problem was that he had gotten a taste of a big boy bed and wanted more.  We got a twin bed, put it in his room and retired his crib to the basement for storage.

After JSL was born, the crib was brought back out and JSL slept there.  As he began approaching three, he seemed to have more and more restless nights.  We would often find him pushing his body against both sides of the crib at once or with arms and legs in the crib slots (at which point we would need to help him get free before he woke up).  We would get him a bed like NHL’s but their room isn’t big enough to support two beds.  There would be literally no space to walk past the beds.

We’ve considered our options and right now our best bet seems to be bunk beds.  JSL would get the bottom bunk and NHL the top.  Of course, we’re worried about potential dangers of bunk beds, but we also don’t see any other option considering their room size.

My Aloha Friday question for this week is: Have you ever had bunk beds?  If so, what do you recommend we look for/look out for?

Aloha Friday: Cooking with Kids

Last week, NHL, JSL and I made pita pizzas for dinner. As young kids, they can tend to limit the foods they want to eat. JSL, for example, would eat Macaroni and Cheese for breakfast, lunch and dinner if we let him. Yet, they also like doing things with me and my hope is that cooking with them will help expand their culinary horizons.

My Aloha Friday question for this week is: Do you cook with your kids? If so, what have you made with them?

Aloha Friday: Happy B-Day JSL & Your Favorite Winnie the Pooh Character

JSL’s third birthday is today. Thanks to our recent Disney World trip, he’s gone Winnie the Pooh crazy. His birthday will have a Winnie the Pooh theme. He likes all of the characters, but I think his favorite is definitely Pooh bear. He even eats hunny… I mean honey and tells me it’s just like Winnie the Pooh eats. Personally, my favorite character is Tigger. He seems constantly full of energy and good spirits. Plus, who wouldn’t want to be bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun?

My Aloha Friday question for this week is: Who is your favorite character from Winnie the Pooh?
