Aloha Friday: Food Festival

This time of year always brings back fond food memories. Since we celebrate Passover, we would have a whole week of eating Matzoh in various forms. Matzoh and cream cheese. Matzoh Pizza (matzoh microwaved with sauce & cheese). Matzoh with schmaltz (rendered chicken fat – tastes like a rich butter) and salt (very unhealthy but oh-so-good). Matzoh Brei (matzoh soaked in water, drained, mixed with eggs and fried like a pancake). Are you sensing a theme here?

Yes, we eat a lot of Matzoh during Passover. It’s pretty much the only “bread” we can eat during the holiday. No rolls, bread, tortillas, pitas, pasta, cereal, or other bread product. In fact, since we’re Ashkenazi, we have more restrictions. No corn (or corn products), beans or rice (among other things).

As you can guess, cooking for Passover can be tricky. Especially when dealing with little kids used to breaded chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese and the like. In years past, we would buy a lot of pre-packaged, frozen foods at great expense. This year, we decided to prepare more fresh foods. Just today, I baked turkey burgers, wrapped them in romaine lettuce leaves and served it with a broccoli/mushroom stir fry in teryaki sauce. (Well, fake teryaki sauce since the real stuff isn’t kosher for Passover.) All in all a delicious, but not too fattening dinner.

My Aloha Friday question for this week is: What meals does this season remind you of? What do you do to eat healthy during holidays?

Aloha Friday: Hunting For Signs Of Spring

At the beginning of last week, I spotted the traditional (at least when I was growing up) sign of spring’s arrival: a robin red breast. I didn’t get a photo, but when I was at the park with the boys during the first official day of spring, I spotted a butterfly. We had B’s camera with us, so I took it and snapped a photo.

Can’t see it? Yeah, it’s hard to spot. That’s why I began tip toeing ever so quietly towards it, trying to get a better photo. Be vewy vewy quiet. I’m hunting buttewfwies. huh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh.

Ok, this one used the camera’s zoom, but I thought I could get a better shot. So I inched closer and closer. I was amazed at how close I was able to get to the butterfly.

Wait a second. That’s a pretty ugly butterfly. All hairy and stuff. That’s no butterfly, it’s a moth! Still, that’s one cool closeup.

Ah, a face only a mother moth could love. Now, I might not have found a sign of spring, but I’m sure they’re out there. My Aloha Friday question is: Have you seen any signs of spring yet?

Aloha Friday: Changing Your Host

You may have noticed that TechyDad.com and TheAngelForever.com were down for quite a bit both this week and last week.  Unfortunately, our web host, Arvixe, has had some severe issues with their servers.  While I don’t doubt that they were working hard to get our web sites back up and running, having 67.5 hours of downtime in 2 weeks makes one think about other hosting options.

We haven’t decided to move just yet.  Even if we did, our hosting requirements are just specific enough to severely limit which hosts we can go with.  Since we use WordPress for our blogs, we obviously need PHP and mySQL.  However, I still like programming in classic ASP, so I need that.  This means a Windows host.  In addition, I need to be able to schedule tasks.  I’ve looked at a few options but so far haven’t come to a conclusion as to what we’ll do next.  (Besides making sure we have up to date backups.)

My questions for you are three-fold:

1) Do you backup your website regularly in case your current host goes belly-up?

2) Would the amount of downtime we’ve had make you rethink where you host your websites?

3) Where do you host your websites now?

Aloha Friday: Dealing With Strong Emotions

You might not know it from talking to me in person, but I can have some pretty strong emotions.  However, over the years, I’ve learned to keep them bottled up.  It might not be the healthiest thing to do, but it is what my life experiences taught me to do.  Now NHL is showing some of the same strong emotions that I have felt and I’m struggling with teaching him how to manage them. » Read more

Aloha Friday: Teaching Kids About Computers

Computers are very important to me.  After all, I work as a webmaster so I’m around computers all day.  When I heard that NHL’s school wasn’t *really* teaching him about computers, but only letting them go online to visit some kid-oriented websites, I decided that *someone* had to teach him about computers.  After all, computers are important in today’s society.  A computer-literate child has more opportunities than a computer-illiterate one.  I quickly decided that I should have semi-regular computer lessons with NHL. » Read more
