Aloha Friday: The Circle Of Housework

Dishwasher_open_for_loadingIt seems like every time I unload the dishwasher, it is because the sink has filled with dishes and I need to load the dishwasher.  Likewise, it seems as though I’ve just finished vacuuming the rug in the dining room when the boys drop a bunch of crumbs down.  I know B feels the same way with the laundry.  She finishes her last batch, puts the last of the clean clothes away, and suddenly – as if by magic – the laundry hamper is half-full again.  Sometimes, it seems as though the household chores are never-ending.  It almost makes me want to re-write the classic Disney song "Circle of Life" into "Circle of Housework."  Well, except there’s a sink full of dishes that won’t get into the dishwasher if I work on that instead.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: What household chores seem never-ending to you?

Aloha Friday: Taking Instant Communication For Granted

Telefon,_Nordisk_familjebokYesterday, I wrote about how I was worried about my friends and families post-Sandy.  This day and age, we’re used to being able to contact anyone we want to whenever we want to.  In some ways, this leads to procrastinating communication.  After all, why make that phone call now when you can do it an hour later or send a text or tweet them?

When people lost power during Sandy, however, the instant communication vanished.  Suddenly, since I couldn’t instantly communicate with friends and family, I found that what I wanted more than anything was to speak with them.  It really is true that you don’t realize how important something is until it’s gone.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: Did you have friends or family in Sandy’s path?  If so, how long did it take you to reach them?

Aloha Friday: Musicality

Yesterday, I wrote about how NHL playing the drums and bells/xylophone.  When I was in school, I played a musical instrument also: violin.  I was never that good at it, though.  To play the violin, you need to draw the bow across the string while placing your fingers in just the right spots to make the correct note.  Doing this once might not be hard, but shifting strings/finger positions in rapid succession to play a song gets tricky.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: Did you ever play an instrument?  If so, were you good at it?

Aloha Friday: Bugged By Bugs

When I was a kid, I remember being very afraid of bugs.  If I was mowing the lawn and a dragonfly passed by me, I’d duck and run away.  If a spider crawled down the walls, I’d have to leave the room.  Don’t even ask me what I did if a bee flew my way.

At some point, though, I got over my fear of bugs.  I think it mainly is due to my love of photography, specifically macro photography.  Once I began looking at the world of small things through the lens of my camera, bugs went from scary creatures to avoid to fascinating subjects to photograph.

Years ago, B would roll her eyes and put up with me crouching over to take a very close photo of a weird bug.  Today, though, I think I’ve (partially) converted her.  When we saw a big, weird looking spider in our front yard, she didn’t even flinch as I asked for her camera.  (We were on our way out and mine was locked in the house.)  And so I took a photo.

ItsyBitsy

Of course, half the fun is taking a photo.  The other half, is zooming in on the photo to see the details.  For example, just how hairy this spider is.

HairySpider

My, what hairy mandibles you have!

Now, if I could only identify what kind of spider this is.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: Do you find bugs fascinating or creepy?

Aloha Friday: Music

Minduka_Music_iconI love listening to music.  I’ll code websites while rocking out to Aerosmith.  I’ll kill an earworm by buying the song and playing it over and over.

I get my music from various sources.  Sometimes, I buy new CDs.  Sometimes, I buy used CDs. Sometimes, I buy digital music from Amazon.com.

Recently, given my Doctor Who obsession, I looked into getting some of the music from the show.  I stumbled upon eMusic, a site I’ve heard of before but never used, and noticed that the price for the Doctor Who album was much less.  Even better, I’d get a $25 credit for signing up.  This would be enough for the Doctor Who album plus one or two other albums.

As I signed up, though, I realized why I don’t buy music from there.  To get my credit – and to buy music at all – I needed to sign up for a monthly plan.  While I’ll buy a bunch of music every now and then, I don’t buy it often enough to justify a monthly fee.  So, for now, I’ll keep buying my music from Amazon’s MP3 store and from CD shops.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: Where do you buy your music from?
