Aloha Friday: Stopping annoying habits

Over the past few months, we’ve been struggling with NHL on a little matter. He keeps putting his fingers in his mouth. Sometimes he’s biting his nails, sometimes he’s sucking on his fingers. A few times, he’ll even put toys (or other objects) in his mouth. Considering that he’s 6 years old, he’s way too old to be doing this. We keep telling him to stop, that he’ll get sick by doing this, but he persists. I’ve even wondered if putting hot sauce on his fingers might stop him. I wouldn’t seriously do this, but when I’m really frustrated it sounds like a good option.

My Aloha Friday question to you is: How would stop your child from doing this or some other annoying habit?

Aloha Friday: How often do you reevaluate your beliefs?

Yesterday, I talked about re-evaluating my religious beliefs. Today, I was wondering how common this is for everyone else. Do people take a good long look at their beliefs and practices every year, every five years, or pretty much never?

My Aloha Friday question to you is: How often do you re-evaluate what your religious beliefs are?

Aloha Friday: Character Hunting #DisneySMMoms

During our Disney trip, last year, we got NHL an autograph book. He had fun getting many character signatures. When we headed back this year, we took the autograph book with us. We went wild with signatures. I believe we got somewhere around 23 new characters to sign his book. Here are photos of some of the new characters (in no particular order):

Aloha Friday: Place That Face at #DisneySMMoms

In a couple more days, we leave for Disney World. While there, I’m sure to meet many people – both whom I’ve already met online and whom I have never spoken with at all. There’s just one little problem: I have a lot of difficulty remembering faces and names. I swear, some days I wish people would walk around with big, descriptive name tags on them. “Of course I remember you. You’re….. uh…. [reading] John. Smith. Of Such-and-Such dot com. How could I ever forget?”

It takes me quite a few times to match faces and names and many things can mess this up. See a person in a setting that I usually don’t see them? Instant unrecognition. (Example: Seeing people from work at the supermarket.) New hairstyle? Who are you again? Not seeing a person on a regular basis? Big trouble remembering them. (Example: Some people from my company who I only see every few months.) Heck, if you lined my cousins and their wives up, I might not be able to match the six of them up properly or remember who is named what. (Of course, it doesn’t help that I see my cousins once per year, tops.)

So my Aloha Friday question to you is: Do you have trouble remembering the names of people you meet? If so, what tricks do you use to keep the faces/names straight?

Aloha Friday: A question of fearful proportions

As our Disney World trip approaches, I find myself getting nervous. It’s not the massive packing that worries me. Honestly, B takes care of most of that. She’s much more organized with that than I am. Were it up to me, we’d likely arrive and find that I forgot to pack pants for the boys. (Ok, maybe I’m not *that* bad.)

What worries me is the flight. Specifically, the take off and the landing. As I’ve mentioned before, I have a fear of falling and of plane take offs/landings. They just get me nervous. I know that fatal crashes are rare. In the post I linked to, I had done some research and found 10 accidents with fatalities in the 5 years prior to 2008 (when the post was made). However, there were about 52 million commercial flights in the US during that same time. All things considered, 0.0000002% fatality risk is pretty good odds. Still, I’m nervous.

So my Aloha Friday question to you is: Do you get nervous on airplanes? If so, how do you handle it? If not, what do you have a fear of?
