Aloha Friday: Time Travel Destinations

Earth_TimeTime Travel has been a hot topic this summer.  First, NHL and I watched the Back To The Future trilogy.  He marveled at the exploits of Doc Brown and Marty McFly through various time periods.  Then, more recently, we finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban where time travel factors in heavily.  (Time travelling wizards!)

The big recent time travel introduction, though, has been my introduction to the world of Doctor Who.  I had put it on my Netflix Instant Queue a long time ago and kept meaning to watch it.  Last week, I finally took the plunge.  I’ve been addicted ever since.

For those who don’t know, Doctor Who is the story of a time travelling alien known only as The Doctor.  He’s the last of his race, the Time Lords.  He travels through time and space with one or more companions.  Along the way, he inevitably runs into danger which he overcomes using mainly his wit and intellect.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: If you could travel to any place in the future or past, where would you go and why?

Aloha Friday: Juggling Social Media

2122754745_26eb3de53c_oI’ve taken the plunge and signed up.  Yes, I’m now on Pinterest.  I’ve been using it for a bit and it’s nice.  I just don’t know how long I’ll be able to devote to it.

When you factor in a full time job, the duties of being a husband and father, freelance work, and my own blog, it’s a wonder that I have time to tweet occasionally.  But Twitter, Instagram, and now Pinterest?  I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep up.  I’ve already all-but-abandoned Google+.  It was really interesting and I still like it, but I just didn’t have the time.  I can only juggle so many before one or more begin to drop.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: How many social networks are you part of? How much time do you spend on social media?

Aloha Friday: NHL Turns Nine

How is it possible that my little guy is nine years old?  It seems like just yesterday that we brought him home from the hospital.  In the nine years, there have been many ups and downs, but it’s been an adventure that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

This year has definitely been a great one.  NHL is finally old enough for me to share a lot of my geeky pleasures with him.  We’re reading the Harry Potter series, playing with Legos, and watching superhero shows.  I’ve even introduced him to movies like Back to the Future.

It’s so amazing how much he’s changed over the years (see the animated GIF below).  I can’t wait to see how he changes in the years to come.  Ok, maybe I can wait a little bit… I don’t want him growing up any quicker!

Happy birthday, NHL!

I don’t exactly have an Aloha Friday question today, just a request: Please wish NHL a happy birthday.

Aloha Friday: Overwhelmed

Lately, I’ve been feeling like I’ve got about 10 hours worth of work to do and only 3 hours to do it in.  I come home from work, make dinner, spend a small amount of time with the kids, and get them into bed.  Then, I’ve got about 3 hours to get everything else done.  By “everything else”, I mean clean up from dinner, work on my blog post, and work on the various freelance projects I have to complete.  Add in a kid (or 2) waking up as I’m actually heading to be and I’ve gotten to sleep at about 1am every night this week.  It wouldn’t be so bad if I could sleep in, but B has this annoying habit of getting me up in the morning so I can go to my day job.  Sheesh!

There’s a mountain of things I’d like to do.  FollowerHQ needs some improvements, I’d like to read up on coding applications for Android devices, I’ve got my tie clip project, I still want to woke out a system to stream movies from our computer to our TV, and more.  This pile keeps calling to me, but I need to push it off.  The things I *have* to do keep draining time from the things I *want* to do.  I feel like I’m running on a treadmill at top speed and still slowly falling behind.  In short, I’m feeling overwhelmed and like I’m headed for a burnout.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?

Aloha Friday: A Birthday Midlife Crisis

bday

Today is my birthday.  I’m thirty-seven today.  It seems like just yesterday that I was feeling depressed over leaving my 20’s behind and turning 30.  Now, I’m dreading the rapidly approaching big Four Zero.

Lately, I’ve been feeling quite old.  The eighties, my formative years, started over thirty years ago.  The nineties, when I went to high school and college, began over twenty years ago.  Songs that I grew up listening to have begun playing on the oldies station.  I’ve even caught myself referring to teenagers and college students as "kids nowadays."  There are times when I feel like I should just grab a cane to shake at `kids as I yell at them to get off my lawn.

I’ll be honest.  I think I feel a midlife crisis coming on.  No, I’m not going to buy a convertible sportscar.  I regard cars solely as tools to get from one place to another.  I’m much too frugal to buy one that isn’t practical.  I’m thinking of a bit of a geekier midlife crisis.  Perhaps I’ll set up a home video network so we can stream all of our videos, music, and photos to any TV in the house.  Maybe I’ll try my hand at making something out of duct tape.  I might even buy a Dremel and some supplies and see if I can replicate an Epbot-inspired project.

First, though, I’m going to buy a few of these:

tieclip

Ok, that particular tie clip was from The Lovely Teaspoon.  I love that one and the USB tie clip that I also bought from her, but it has got me itching to try making a few of my own.  Not to sell, mind you.  For my own use.  (If you want to buy a tie clip, or earrings or cufflinks, check out The Lovely Teaspoon’s Etsy shop.  She’s got lots of cool stuff.)  I wear a tie five times a week and it would be cool if I could alternate out geeky tie clips to go with my geeky ties.

I’m thinking Lego bricks (facing up so I can attach different minifigs) on some and perhaps a USB thumb drive on another (situated so you can plug it in).  I was even thinking of taking a Disney Vinylmation pin, removing the "pin" part (Dremel?) and attaching it to the clip.  I *am* a Disney Geek, after all.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: What geeky item would you attach to a tie clip?
