Aloha Friday: Picky Passover Progeny and Cuisine I Crave

Passover means that a lot of our favorite foods turn into shadows of their non-Passover selves.  Cakes and cookies get replaced with bland knock-offs that use matzo meal instead of real flour.  Bread is a big no-no.  Pizza is just sauce and cheese slapped on matzo.  The less said about “Passover Pasta” the better.  (NOTE: Just because a food claims to be “Passover Pasta” doesn’t it will cook up anything even remotely resembling, much less tasting like, real pasta.)

As I posted earlier this week, JSL has had a hard time this year.  He’s a very picky eater and all of his favorite foods are Passover no-nos.  He is refusing to try new things.  Why?  Because he doesn’t try a food unless he already knows he likes the food.  (Yeah, yeah, I know.  Doesn’t make any sense.  You try arguing with the 4 year old.  I’ve already tried tons of times.)  The few times he’s tried something (under heavy protest, mind you), he’s either spat it out or proclaimed that he loves it but doesn’t want to eat it ever again.

All this has got me thinking about what foods I miss.  I certainly miss my usual breakfast of oatmeal and bananas.  Bananas are fine, but replacing the oatmeal with matzo and cream cheese just isn’t the same.  I also miss being able to use beans and corn.  Most of all, I guess I miss the pasta and bread, though.  So much of what I eat contains pasta or bread in some way, shape, or form that I couldn’t imagine not ever eating that again.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: What one food could you never give up for good?

Aloha Friday: Passover Seder

Passover is nearly here.  Soon all my cleaning will be over… And then I’ll begin preparing food for the Seder.  I’ll be cooking chicken, stuffed cabbage, quinoa pilaf, and more.  The cleaning frenzy will be replaced with a cooking frenzy.  Finally, as the cooking is completed, I’ll actually be able to enjoy the Seder with my family.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: Have you ever attended a Seder?

Aloha Friday: Lack of Caffeine

Morning GiraffeEvery morning, people around the world stumble out of bed and reach for that first cup of coffee.  Many folks can’t make it through the day without it.  I’ll admit that there are plenty of mornings when I can hardly drag myself out of bed.  I’d love to grab a cup of coffee to help me wake up, but I don’t.

For some reason, I just never got into drinking coffee.  It just doesn’t appeal to me.  I’ve tried tea and, while I like it, the caffeine in it just doesn’t help wake me up at all.  (I usually reserve tea for days when I’m sick.  Tea + Honey = Soothed Sore Throat.)

Part of me feels like I’m missing out on a part of geek culture.  After all, ThinkGeek has a whole section of their site devoted to all things caffeinated.  I just don’t desire coffee though.  Besides, not drinking coffee means that I have an excuse to nap.  (Not that I get to *use* the excuse often, but the excuse is there.)

My Aloha Friday question for today is: Do you drink coffee?

BTW, the photo above is dedicated to Anissa Mayhew who I’ve often seen posting about caffeine in the morning.  If I ever get the chance to meet Anissa in person, I’m buying her a big cup of coffee!

Aloha Friday: Staying at Disney

When we go to Disney, we usually opt for the value resorts, specifically Pop Century.  Sure, the rooms are smaller and they aren’t as nice as the moderate or deluxe resorts, but let’s be honest: How much time do you stay in your room?  If you’re like us, your Disney World room is a place to leave early in the morning and a place to crash in at night.

Given that, we like that we can save some money on the hotel.  That money can be spent on meals or some souvenirs.  Besides, Pop Century is the only place that we can get this:

Yes, that’s multi-color cheesecake atop red velvet cake.  It’s insanely delicious.  I even replicated it a couple of times.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: Do you usually opt for a less expensive room to save money or do you prefer the move lavish rooms when you vacation?

Aloha Friday: Three and a Half Four Eyes

Over the past few weeks, NHL has been complaining about headaches.  At first, we thought he was just trying to get out of doing homework.  Eventually, though, we began to wonder if he was actually having trouble seeing.  An eye doctor’s appointment confirmed our suspicions: NHL needed glasses.

We tried on a few pairs, but NHL quickly decided that he had a favorite.  Can you tell why?

Here’s a hint:

Just call him NHL Potter!  Expelliarmus!

Of course, JSL started to feel left out.  After all, I have glasses, B has glasses and now NHL has glasses.  So he got his own pair.

They might not be real, but they keep him happy.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: Do your kids wear glasses?
