Happy Birthday To NHL

NHL-Turns-TenTomorrow, NHL turns ten.  I can’t believe that my little guy is actually leaving single-digit years.  He’s getting so big so fast.  Over the past year, NHL has grown so much and this year has been filled with many highs and lows.

At school, he began the year incredibly smoothly.  Since we had a diagnosis, we no longer needed to make wild stabs at ways of helping NHL reach his potential.  We now knew what would work and what wouldn’t.  In addition, he had a substitute who knew just how to work with a child with Asperger’s Syndrome.  This helped cut NHL’s outbursts from half hour long affairs to a mere three minutes – most of which was spent with NHL moved to an area for him to decompress and calm down.

The diagnosis also helped NHL learn how to become an advocate for himself.  Over the past year, he has made huge strides in making sure that people know just WHAT he is taking issue with an WHY.  He has a long way to go still, of course, but his progress has been amazing.  He even joined us at a recent rally to show his opposition to the ridiculous regimen of testing that he and his peers were being subjected to.

NHL also continued playing for band last year.  He has demonstrated an amazing proficiency for music.  Not only can he memorize songs, but he has shown the ability to play songs that he learned for one instrument on another one.

On the geeky side, NHL has grown by leaps and bounds.  While we made little progress with Harry Potter, I’ve introduced NHL to both Back to the Future, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  More recently, I showed him Doctor Who and he quickly became a Whovian.  He can now be heard saying “Exterminate!” or “Are you my mummy?”  We’ve also gone to quite a few museums to see the exhibits and have fun while learning about science.

I introduced NHL to the world of card-based gaming with Nuclear War, but NHL’s real love is computer/tablet gaming.  His recent favorites include Wonder Zoo, Turbo Racing League, and My Muppets Show.

Recently, NHL got braces on his top teeth.  We were wary about how he’d handle them, but he’s been great about it.  He immediately learned what foods he could eat and what foods he couldn’t.  He is very strict about this.  (Though it can get annoying when he tries to ask every waiter/waitress at every restaurant we go to whether the chicken is too crispy for him, at least it means that he’s trying to be a self-advocate.)

He’s come so far and I’m so proud of him every day.  Happy birthday, NHL, I can’t wait to see how you grow in the next year.  (Just don’t grow too quickly, please!)

A Doctor Who/Dole Whip-seeking/Mini-Golfing/Chocolate-Cakey Birthday

Saturday was my birthday.  I awoke a 38 year old thinking about how far I’ve come.  Ten years ago, I was a father to be.  Six years ago, I had just become a father for the second time a few months prior.  In that time, I’ve done my part to raise my boys to be just as geeky as I am.  Sure enough, the presents that B and the boys got me were definitely geeky.

gifts

That’s a sonic screwdriver, mini-TARDIS, and a Dalek bookmark.  I wasted no time putting the batteries in my new sonic screwdriver and trying it out.  A few seconds after that, the kids were trying it out as I desperately tried to get it back.  JSL has now declared that HE wants a sonic screwdriver.  Though we probably won’t buy him one (he’s got enough toys right now), B might try knitting or crocheting one for him.  There are a lot of patterns online for sonic screwdrivers.

After the gifts, we ate a quick breakfast at home and went to the local mall.  I had heard the previous day that Menchie’s frozen yogurt was offering Dole pineapple flavor.  Disney fans know this as Dole Whip: A frozen creation that no trip to Disney World or Disney Land is complete without.  In fact, the only place you can get Dole Whips were the two Disney parks and the Dole factory.  And now Menchie’s.

We stopped by and – after eating lunch to give the lines for the grand opening time to die down a bit – looked inside.  It looked amazing, but there was no Dole Whip.  Luckily, the manager was there and mentioned that he did have the Dole pineapple mix in the back – it just wasn’t one of their weekly flavors.  He also had no clue what a big deal Dole Whips were.  We gave him our card and he said he’d definitely update his Facebook page to let us know when the pineapple goodness is available.  (Check the Menchie’s by you.  If they have Dole Pineapple… GET IT!!!!  You’re welcome.)  We’ll be headed back there another day.

After that, we headed to FunPlex Fun Park in East Greenbush.  Here, we mini-golfed 18 pirate themed holes.  The boys had a blast avoiding sharks and hitting their balls through wrecked ships.

When we were done golfing, we picked up a cake for me, went out to dinner, and then went to B’s parents house to have dessert.  I picked out a "7th Heaven" cake from Price Chopper.

cake

Price Chopper describes this as:

Four chocolate layers filled with whipped ganache and Hershey’s icing. Melted ganache is drizzled over Hershey’s whipped topping. Garnished with chocolate spaghetti and rosettes for a real slice of heaven.

And this WAS a slice of heaven.  By all rights, this much chocolate should be overly sugary and too much chocolate.  But it works.  Even non-chocoholic B loved it.  It was a little bit more than the basic cakes, but it was well worth it.

Oh, and my in-laws got me a wonderful Doctor Who shirt.

It was a wonderful way to start the day.  I can’t wait to see what the next year brings.

Birthday Present Conundrum

bday_giftTomorrow is my birthday.  As the special day approaches, people start to mention the one thing I dread about birthdays.  Ok, not greying hairs.  Or receding hairlines.  (Which I totally DON’T have despite B’s insisting that I do.)  Or more and more signs appearing that I’m no longer young.  (Instinctively referring to college students as "kids"… music I grew up with playing on the oldies station… etc.)

Ok, one of the many THINGS I dread about birthdays: Deciding what present(s) I want people to get me.

Every year, when I’m asked what I want, I start to think.  There’s always a list of some geeky item that I’d love to own.  Perhaps a sonic screwdriver.  Maybe a set of Doctor Who figures.  Possibly, a TeeFury shirt.  On the other hand, I look at the geeky things that I’ve bought in the past and I see a pile of items that I never look at.

I begin to think that, perhaps, I don’t need the new item after all.  Instead, I start to think about what practical gift I could use.  When I think of practical items, I think of things I could use while helping other people.  If I had a bigger external hard drive, I could back up more data from our computers.  If I had a cell phone mount, I could read directions from my phone while driving the boys to activities.

I’m torn between the geeky, non-practical items and the not-as-geeky, much more practical items.

When you think about presents people could buy for you, what sort of items do you choose?

Pirate Party at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores

Awhile back, we were trying to decide what to do for JSL’s first birthday party with friends.  Should we go to a bowling alley?  Play mini-golf?  Maybe head to Chuck-E-Cheese.  Then, while buying some fabric at Jo-Ann Fabrics, we spoke with some lovely ladies doing a demonstration in the front of the store.  They mentioned classes they were giving on cake decorating (as well as other crafts).  Then, they mentioned that they did parties also.

Looking at the options, we spotted a pirate party.  This piqued our interest as well as JSL’s.  After all, JSL is a BIG fan of both pirates and crafting.  The more we heard about it, the more we knew that this was the best kind of party for JSL and his friends.

We got there the day of the party and a Jo-Ann Fabrics employee named Alex was setting everything up with her assistant (also named Alex).  Slowly but surely, kids began to arrive and the party began.

First, the kids got to paint treasure chests.  JSL painted his gold.  NHL went for silver and some other colors.  Some kids went a very colorful route.

With the treasure chests painted and set aside to dry, it was time to make some treasure to go in the chests.  After all, no self respecting pirate has an empty chest.

I knew that they were going to use modeling clay for this so I wasn’t surprised when they brought this out.  What did surprise me was when they brought out glitter as well.  The kids rolled the clay in the glitter, twisted the clay to mix the glitter in, and then shaped it.  Pearls, rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and gold coins began to take shape.

Eventually, all of the treasure was formed and set aside.  (Pro tip that Alex told us when we started the party: Always write the kids’ names on the plates.  Otherwise you’ll never be able to tell whose craft is whose.)  The table was cleaned and all hands were washed.  Now, it was time for the most fun craft of the day: cupcakes!

We had been instructed to bring unfrosted cupcakes and had plenty in our cupcake carrier.  Alex, meanwhile, had just about everything a kid could want to top a cupcake with.

There was squeeze tube frosting in a rainbow of colors, glitter gel, and sprinkles of every shape, size, and color.  Just being near the box was enough to give one a sugar rush.  The kids got frosting in the colors they wanted, frequently changing to get new colors on their cupcakes.  Glitter gel was applied on top and then sprinkles upon sprinkles were added until the cupcakes could take no more.

We lit a candle, sang happy birthday to JSL, and he blew out his candle.  Then, the kids dug in.  Those cupcakes which they lovingly spent time decorating were gone in seconds.  And they enjoyed every moment of it.  (Nothing makes a cupcake taste better than decorating it yourself.)

After this, we had a second round of treasure chest painting.  The chests had dried so the kids were able to add some additional details to them.

Before we knew it, it was time for the kids to leave.  JSL said goodbye to them all.  They left with their treasure chests and treasures.  They also left with a pirate bandana, rubber ducky, and snacks that we had brought with us.

JSL and his friends had a fantastic time and the staff at Jo-Ann Fabrics had a big hand in this.  We left with NHL saying he wanted to have his birthday party there as well.  Whatever we do, our thanks go out to the staff at our local Jo-Ann Fabrics for making JSL’s party so memorable.

Disclaimer:  I wasn’t paid, compensated, or otherwise encouraged to write this blog post.  We paid for JSL’s party and just wanted to share a wonderful experience we had.

Happy Birthday JSL!

JSL-Turns-SixToday would have been JSL’s birthday, but we cancelled it.  You see, he’s growing up too quickly.  We decided we liked 5-year-old JSL too much to give him up.  So we’re hitting the pause button and he’s staying 5 forever.

Rats, I seem to have misplaced the pause button. I know I had it here a second ago.

Well, it looks like JSL’s having his birthday after all.

This past year has been a big one for JSL.  He started it off in pre-K and not knowing many of his letters.  He is ending it a Kindergartener (but soon to be first grader) who not only knows all of his letters, but knows how to read and write stories as well! He’s also become adept at simple addition as well.

JSL has shown that he’s got a huge imagination.  He can entertain himself for a long time playing with toys on the floor or magnets on the refrigerator.  He makes up storylines and characters and acts out what they do.

He’s also turning into quite the little geekling.  He loves Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, all things Disney, Transformers, playing on the computer/iPad, or reading books.  He also loves riding his bike around the block with me.  (I walk currently, but I’d love to get a bike to ride.)

I’m so proud of my not-so-little-anymore kid.  Happy birthday, JSL!
