Do You Wanna Play Some Munchkin? (A Tabletop Parody of Disney’s Frozen)

Singing_Dancing_Sword_Winter A couple of weeks ago, inspiration hit.  I had been playing Munchkin with NHL quite a bit and heard yet another Frozen parody song.  Suddenly, words were flowing into my brain.  I quickly jotted them down knowing that, if I didn’t, they would disappear forever.  Those words were followed by more and more until an entire song was formed.  I had turned "Do You Wanna Build A Snowman" into "Do You Wanna Play Some Munchkin".

I wasn’t finished, though.  As I read through the lyrics with NHL and JSL, I could tell they loved the song.  However, there were a few weak points where I just didn’t like the flow.  NHL helped me tweak parts of it to make it even better.  I fully credit the "Snails on Speed" section to NHL.

Eventually, we were happy with the song.  I found a karaoke version of Do You Wanna Build A Snowman and let it play as I sung the words.  The boys were hooked.  Even now, NHL will break into song at random points and has memorized most of the lyrics.

I had planned on revealing this with a video showcasing NHL and I singing this, but we haven’t made it yet and I just can’t hold this back any longer.  I still plan on making a video, but for now, you can just sing along at home.

Enough introductions, though.  Let’s kick down this door and play… I mean sing some Munchkin!

Do You Wanna Play Some Munchkin?
(Sung to the tune of Do You Wanna Build A Snowman from Disney’s Frozen)

[Knocks]
Do you wanna play some Munchkin?
I’ve got the cards. Let’s play!
Snails on Speed are behind the door
They’re a level four
Minus two to run away!

I’ve got the Slimy Armor
Wishing Ring too
And Cloak Of Obscurity!

Do you wanna play some Munchkin?
You can be the biggest Munchkin…

{Go away}

Okay, bye…

[Knocks]
Do you wanna boil an anthill?
Or maybe bribe GM with food?
We could fight against a Pukachu
Or beat some Harpies too
That Net Troll’s pretty rude!

(Yes! Rolled a five.)

I hope that the Wight Brothers
Aren’t behind this door
‘Cause I’m just a level three…
(kick-kick kick-kick kick-Boom! ARGH!)

Please, I need your help now.
It’s a Plutonium Dragon
My Singing and Dancing Sword won’t do
Sleep Potion’s just plus two
Won’t you jump in?

Please use your Staff of Napalm
And then you can pick
Of treasures, the first two!

Do you wanna play some Munchkin?

NOTE: The "Singing Dancing Sword" card is a photo I took (and then enhanced) of a Munchkin card.  Thanks go to Steve Jackson Games and John Kovalic for such a wonderful game.  Also to Disney for the amazing movie that is Frozen.  Finally, to Wil Wheaton for his Tabletop program which helped me hook NHL on Munchkin in the first place!

Geek Bucket List

To-Do_List_smallNot to get too morbid, but there are many things that I’d want to do before I die.  Some of these are the usual things:  See my kids grow up and get married, become a grandfather, grow old with my wife.  Some are usual hopes and dreams but probably unlikely.  For example, becoming extremely rich.  (It would be nice to not have money be a daily concern.)  Some of the things I’d want to do are more geeky, though.  These are the items on my Geek Bucket List.

Convention Bound

Every year, there are conventions where people crowd into buildings dressed in all manners of wonderful costumes from video games, TV shows, comic books, movies, and more.  I’ve seen photos and have heard stories about these conventions and – I must admit – I’m a bit jealous.

Though I know dealing with the crowds would be a pain and I’ve heard stories of the "con crud" sickness that can often result from so many people crammed into so tight a space, I still want to go.  I want to walk among the robots, starship captains, superheroes, and Daleks knowing that *this* is my tribe.  I want to constantly be amazed (and, yes, slightly jealous) at the incredible costumes that people made from scratch, want to take WAY too many photos (and have photos of me taken with too many people), and geek out a tad too much.  (Where "a tad" really means that I’ll be in a state of extreme geek out for a week after the convention ends.)

Of course, I’d love for my kids to experience this also, but I’m torn.  Part of me would love to see them geek out alongside me, but another part wonders if they would tire too easily forcing me to either drag them along protesting or to miss much of the convention.  So consider this two bucket list entries:  1) Go to a major Comic Con without my kids and 2) Go to a major Comic Con with my kids.

Star Wars Weekend At Disney World

It’s no secret that I’m a big Disney geek.  If I could earn a living by staying in Disney hotel rooms, eating in Disney restaurants, and going on Disney rides, I would.  The only thing I don’t like about Disney World is the part where you have to come home and face reality again.

In addition, I’m a big Star Wars geek.  I loved the original trilogy.  While I didn’t love the prequels as much, I’m thoroughly enjoying the Clone Wars TV show (which I somehow missed the first time around).  I’ve introduced my boys to Star Wars and now they are big Star Wars geeks also.

So combining Disney World and Star Wars?  Sign me up.  I want to see everyone dressed as aliens, Jedi, Sith, and other characters from the Star Wars Universe.  I want to take photos of them, watch Storm troopers dance, and maybe even have a duel with Darth Vader.  Yes, the crowds will be incredible, but – just like Comic Con – the payoff would be more than worth it.

Write A Science Fiction Story And Get It Published

At one point, I wanted to write science fiction stories.  I didn’t just want to, though, I actually wrote some short stories.  Then, I took it a step further and submitted one to a magazine to be published.  Unfortunately, it was rejected.  It was at this point that I did something I regret:  I gave up.  Instead of redoubling my efforts, I took the rejection personally and didn’t submit any more stories for publication.

Over the years, I’ve had quite a few ideas for stories.  I’ve even started writing some of them.  However, at some point, I always get distracted (whether it be by day-to-day life, projects, or something else) and wind up dropping writing.  But the stories and characters still echo in my head.  One day, I would love to commit them to paper and publish them.

Thankfully, we’re living in a golden age for publishing.  In the past, to be published, you needed to convince a big publisher that your book was worthwhile.  Then, they would grant you the permission to publish under their label and your books could wind up in the book stores.  If you wanted to self-publish, chances were your works would look amateurish.  Professional-looking publishing was out of reach of normal people.

Today, though, publishing is as close as going to Amazon.com or any of the other self-publishing outfits.  You don’t even need to commit to physically printed books.  You can sell eBook versions of your stories and, if they sell well, move on to the pricier printed books.  This, of course, assumes that I could get my act together and keep at my writing overcoming distractions.

That’s my geeky list so far.  At least the ones that are likely to happen.  There are other, less likely items, list playing a tabletop game with Wil Wheaton, meeting Stan Lee with my kids (they are big Marvel superhero fans), and coding a hit app (which would require me to learn to code apps first – not impossible given that I code for a living, but less likely given my lack of spare time).

Then there’s the impossible item which was the first item ever on my Geek Bucket List (predating my even calling it that): Meet Isaac Asimov.  He was (and still is) my favorite science fiction author.  Sadly, he died many years ago, so meeting him is an impossibility (unless someone invents time travel).

What geeky items are on your bucket list?

Make Games

make_gamesI’ve been a fan of playing games for quite some time and have introduced my boys to the joys of gameplay.  I’m also a big fan of Wil Wheaton’s web series Tabletop where he and a few guests play various games from Munchkin to Qwirkle.  I showed my boys part of the Qwirkle episode and they were hooked.  Not on the series as much as the game itself.  They don’t want to watch people play games, they want to play the games themselves!

What could be better than this?  What about making a game?

A week ago, I happened to look down on the floor and noticed that the tiles were shaped the same as the tiles from Settlers of Catan.  I’m not sure how my mind put it all together, but suddenly those simple floor tiles were sparking an imagination.  I pulled out my smartphone, jotted down some ideas and did some research on making my own game.

As I fleshed out the gameplay, I realized I’d need a board, cards (to represent armor, spells, weapons, etc), some kind of token to represent hearts, dice, and figures to move across the board.  Luckily, I had many of these already.  From a previous game effort.

(Awhile back, I attempted to make a card game with NHL. We decided that the game should help him learn math so there was a lot of adding and subtracting involved. The only problem was that NHL’s math skills proceeded quicker than we could make the game. In the end, we abandoned the effort, but I kept all of the pieces just in case.)

The hearts were from our previous game-creation effort.  They were index cards which we cut into squares and which NHL drew hearts on.  The dice were a purchase from our local comic book store (under $1 each) and the figures were Lego minifigs pulled from a large collection we have.

To create the board, I first looked at purchasing hexagonal pieces, but then I got a better idea.  I remembered a website that ThinkGeek had tweeted about a website that lets you print your own grid paper.  This seemed like an essentially-free option to begin with.  (We could always upgrade the game to use tiles.)  As for the cards, we could use normal, blank index cards.

At this point, I revealed my plan to my boys.  They were both excited about it.  JSL, in particular, has forbade me from doing any work on the game unless he’s involved.

No, this game won’t appear in stores to purchase.  (Though I might post the game once it is done.)  The rules are sure to be extremely simple to the point that people who make actual games would scoff at them.  And the the cards won’t have fancy artwork.  In fact, the entire thing will scream "homemade." Still, this will be awesome because I’ll be making this with my boys.

Scenes From A GeekEnd

This past weekend was cause to geek out.

First, the boys and I went to Free Comic Book Day.  We all exited having obtained some cool comics and having met Black Widow and The Joker.

Black_WidowJoker

The guy who was dressed as the Joker was completely into his role.  He consented to photos with my boys with their Spider-Man and Perry The Platypus hoods up so long as they didn’t take him back to the asylum.  Then, as we left, he followed two girls back to their car so they could get their phone and take photos with him.  At one point, he grabbed their phone and ran off giving a perfect Joker cackle.  (He did give it back, but the laugh was eerily perfect.)

Next came Star Wars Day.  We first went to the library to look for some Star Wars cooking books.  (Star Wars Cookbook: Wookie Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes and Star Wars Cookbook II: Darth Malt and Other Galactic Recipes.)  We were also hunting for The Simpsons, Season 2.  The boys are now hooked on the adventures of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie, and company.  We own season 1, but buying every season would be cost prohibitive.  After all, The Simpsons are already in season 25!  While the library didn’t have that, they were able to put in a request for it for me.  While there, we found some other books and games to take out – including a Clone Wars Lightsaber Duel game for the Wii.

That night, JSL wanted to eat dinner with his grandparents, so we took NHL out and then stopped by some stores to  buy some gifts for Star Wars Day – including used copies of three Star Wars games for the Wii.

The next day, after Hebrew School, we ate a quick lunch out, made a grocery store run, and then headed home.  The boys got some of their Star Wars toys and had fun with them and the games.  Thankfully, the weather held out and we were able to play outside with the boys’ foam lightsabers as well.

In addition to the usual battle to the death (followed by – in a bit of Doctor Who-Star Wars crossover – our characters regenerating and joining the battle again), I took out a bubble making machine and let JSL slash at the bubbles with his lightsaber.  This turned out to be quite the brilliant activity to let him get all of his energy out without me getting exhausted.

Of course, for dinner, we had Boba Fett-uccini and That’s No Meatballs.  (Veggie meatballs.)  We closed out Star Wars day with a Jedi Smoothie.  I was originally going to call this "blue milk" but it came out more purple than blue.  Perfect for Mace Windu’s lightsaber, though.

All in all, this was quite the successful geek-filled weekend!

Geek Weekend – Free Comic Book Day and May The Fourth

lightsaber-battleThis weekend is going to be a very big couple of days for geeks all over.

Free Comic Book Day

Tomorrow begins the celebrations with Free Comic Book Day.  Every year, on the first Saturday in May, comic book shops around the globe give away comic books.  I’ve written before about our previous free comic book day trips.  I hope to go with the boys again this year.  I’m not sure if our local comic book store will have people dressed in costume like they’ve had last year, but it’s always fun to see what comic books interest the boys.

May The Fourth

Sunday is May the 4th.  Star Wars fans, noticing the similarity between the day’s name and the Star Wars quote "May the Force be with you" have adopted this day as "Star Wars Day."  We already have our foam lightsabers ready to go.  (We might take them with us to Free Comic Book Day as well.)  Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t look like it will hold out to allow us to conduct some lightsaber battles outside.  We might need a raincheck for that.

Will you be attending Free Comic Book Day?  How will you celebrate May the Fourth?
