Sandy’s Halloween Trick

Wednesday is Halloween.  However, thanks to Hurricane Sandy, going Trick or Treating is the last thing on many people’s minds.  We knew that Wednesday was likely going to be a washout here.  Of course, if that’s Sandy’s only legacy by us, we’ll count ourselves lucky.

On Sunday, the sky was cloudy, but there was no rain.  It was a perfect time for the boys to a) be outside (something they won’t get to do for the next couple of days) and b) try out their costumes.

Boys In Costumes

JSL had decided he wanted to be Buzz Lightyear.  Unfortunately, all of the Buzz costumes were for little kids and didn’t fit him.  After Buzz, he couldn’t decide on Indiana Jones or Captain America.  In the end, Captain America prevailed.

The costume itself was purchased for Halloween, but the mask and shield were items JSL already owned.  (His mask fit better than the costume’s included mask.)

NHL chose Harry Potter, of course.  We’re in the middle of reading the books and he’s in love with the entire series.  When he needed glasses, back in March, he even picked a frame out because it looked like Harry’s.

NHL Potter

NHL loves casting spells with his wand, even if he wasn’t quite character-accurate with the magic he was doing.  Hint: Harry Potter does not tend to use Unforgiveable Curses like Cruciatus or Avada Kedavra.

The kids had a blast playing in their costumes.  We don’t know what the next few days will bring.  Hopefully, we’ll escape this hurricane with minimal damage.  At least the boys were able to have some fun before Sandy struck.

Multiple Night-Time Wake Up Calls

nicubunu_Emoticons_Sleeping_faceAs I’m writing this, I’m tired.  Very, very tired.  The previous couple of nights is a bit of a blur, but I do know that JSL was up… a lot.  He would complain about his toes itching, complain about having bad dreams, complain about being afraid of the dark, etc.  Every time we thought he was asleep for good, every time we would get back to sleep, he’d wake up once more.  We tried putting him in our bed, putting him back in his own bed, everything.  He just wouldn’t stay asleep.

Part of it might be his breathing.  We’re not sure if he’s starting to come down with a cold or if he’s just been having a bout of bad dreams.  Either way, his nighttime antics have left the two of us frustrated and exhausted.  Here’s hoping that he (and his brother) will sleep through the night for a few nights so we can get some actual sleep.

Aloha Friday: Breakfast Time

Gerald_G_Fast_Food_Breakfast_(FF_Menu)_11While I’ve written about my boys being fussy eaters before, lately it has gotten worse.  JSL’s usual breakfast is Boost – a protein shake that gives him vitamins, protein and other healthful stuff hidden behind a chocolaty flavor.  He calls it "chocolate drink."  I’ll admit I’m not 100% happy with him thinking that chocolate = breakfast, but – between that and eating nothing – I’ll break out the Boost.

The past couple of weeks, however, he’s been refusing chocolate drink.  So we offer waffles, bagels, chocolate chip cereal bars… Nope.  All refused.  He insists that he’s not hungry, but we know better.  If he doesn’t eat breakfast, then he’ll be hungry long before lunchtime.

It’s not like we’re expecting him to eat a three egg omelette, stack of pancakes, hash browns, and a giant bowl of fruit salad.  Just eat half of a bagel with cream cheese and we’ll be happy.  Instead breakfast time has become "fight to get JSL to eat something before he goes to school" time.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: What do you usually eat for a quick breakfast?

Reversing The Stereotypes

In our household, we try hard not to fall into the standard stereotypes.  Though I go to the office and B stays home, I do the cooking when I get home.  I’m also generally in charge of the vacuum.  B, on the other hand, is more of a sports fan than I am.

This has rubbed off on our boys.  JSL, recently, wanted a baby doll.  We didn’t question a boy playing with a doll.  After all, NHL has one already.  However, much as we searched, we couldn’t find a boy baby for him.  Frustrated, we railed against the toy companies for thinking that only girls want to play with dolls and then only with girl ones.

Finally, JSL pointed out to us that it didn’t have to be a boy doll.  He could get a girl doll.  It was nice to see that he didn’t see anything wrong with a boy playing with a baby girl.  (In part, he sees it as a replacement for the baby sister that we’re not giving him.)

Of course, this doesn’t mean that JSL is immune from stereotyping.  During Yom Kippur, I was fasting and so didn’t feel up to making dinner.  B volunteered to make some food, but JSL protested.  He insisted that she couldn’t because she didn’t know how to cook.

Yes, because I’m usually the one who makes the food, JSL now thinks that B is incapable of cooking at all.  The stereotype was reversed: Dads cook and Moms don’t.  We informed him that this wasn’t the case and B made dinner.  Still, it was quite funny to us to see the stereotype turned on its head.

What stereotypes do you break in your household?

Aloha Friday: School Time

school-boundThis was the first week of school for NHL and JSL.  NHL is now in the fourth grade.  After a very rough second grade and some moments in the third grade that made us want to break down and cry, we’ve got some hope that this year might improve.

JSL, meanwhile, is now starting kindergarten in the same building as NHL.  The transition hasn’t been easy.  He’s embarking on a brand new adventure, but he is scared of the change.  Drop offs have been filled with tears (both his and B’s).  Still, once he gets into the groove, I know he’ll have a blast.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: How have your kids taken to the start of the school year?
