Kids At Play

Today is the first day of school.  This means that summer is over (unofficially, at least).  My kids once again need to worry about getting ready in the morning, homework, and other "fun" school-related chores.  Before the sun set on summer fun for the last time, though, we had one more fun moment.  We went to Aunt S’s house by the lake.  There, they enjoyed many fun activities with their cousins and other members of B’s family.

Mountain Climbing

Ok, this is just a steep hill and not a mountain.  Still, the boys had a blast climbing the mountain and running down it.  I, meanwhile, liked climbing it for the view it afforded me.

Boat Trip

What good is a house on the lake without a boat?  Though NHL opted out in favor of the pool (more on that later), JSL and I went out with Nana, Papa, Cousin A and Uncle M.  The trip began in an eventful manner with the engine dying.  We were just far enough from the dock to see it slowly drift away with no way to get back.  We did have a good view, though.

Luckily, Cousin A found a loose fuel injector line, fixed it, and we were good to go.  JSL loved driving the boat and watching Cousin A water skiing.

The boat ride ended with a bang.  Or rather a splash.  JSL was standing at the front with Papa when a big wave hit the boat soaking both of them.  (Sadly, my camera was pointed elsewhere at that moment, so I didn’t capture it.)  JSL was first upset by the sudden face full of water but he quickly decided that it was funny instead.

Pool Time Fun

As mentioned before, NHL opted to go in the pool.  As I understand it, he and Cousin S did some diving into the water.  The next day, JSL, NHL, B, and I went to the pool together.  B didn’t have her swimsuit, so the boys and I went into the water together.  JSL was apprehensive, especially once he felt the cold water, but he soon got in the pool spirit and was laughing along with NHL and me.

Sand and Surf

Our last visit was to the beach right near the pool.  There, NHL and JSL broke out some sand toys and had fun digging in the sand.  We also walked all the way out to the buoys that mark the end of the "safe to walk/swim" area.  Having grown up on Long Island, the beach brings back some great memories for me.  I still find it very relaxing to just sit chest-deep in the water and let the waves rock me back and forth.  I showed this to NHL and he agreed that it felt nice and calming.

Of course, calm isn’t as much fun and getting down and dirty in the sand.

Yes, school might be starting now.  Their freedom to do whatever they want will be curtailed as things they WANT to do take a backseat to things they HAVE to do.  Still, it’s nice that they had one last summer weekend milked for every ounce of fun it contained.

Aloha Friday: Time Travel Destinations

Earth_TimeTime Travel has been a hot topic this summer.  First, NHL and I watched the Back To The Future trilogy.  He marveled at the exploits of Doc Brown and Marty McFly through various time periods.  Then, more recently, we finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban where time travel factors in heavily.  (Time travelling wizards!)

The big recent time travel introduction, though, has been my introduction to the world of Doctor Who.  I had put it on my Netflix Instant Queue a long time ago and kept meaning to watch it.  Last week, I finally took the plunge.  I’ve been addicted ever since.

For those who don’t know, Doctor Who is the story of a time travelling alien known only as The Doctor.  He’s the last of his race, the Time Lords.  He travels through time and space with one or more companions.  Along the way, he inevitably runs into danger which he overcomes using mainly his wit and intellect.

My Aloha Friday question for today is: If you could travel to any place in the future or past, where would you go and why?

TechyDad vs. The Wasps

WaspsI’m a pretty easy going person when it comes to animals around my house.  When a rabbit was munching my plants a few years back, I insisted on getting a non-toxic spray to ward it off.  I don’t even mind bees.  In fact, I love taking photos of them close up.  However, when a group of wasps think that my house would make a perfect nesting spot, I go all out.

My War On Wasps started on Saturday night.  The wasps had constructed their nest by the highest point of the side of my house under an overhang.  Having procured some wasp spray, I took my position a safe distance under their nest and sprayed it.  The wasps definitely didn’t like being poisoned and I retreated back into the house.  The next night, I sprayed them with some more, but found that I had been a bit overzealous the first night.  My spray ran out with hardly any hitting the nest.

Monday, we acquired some more anti-wasp spray.  This touted a 27 foot spray reach.  Out I went again, to attack them, but this time my weapon backfired.  As I sprayed upward, I saw the plume of spray widen and turn into a cloud.  The cloud then drifted toward me as I was barely able to jump out of the way.  I tried again, but with the same results.  I conceded this night’s battle before I got a face full of poison.

The next night, I decided to try another tactic.  These are paper wasps so perhaps their nest would be vulnerable to water.  My hose has a very impressive range when on the most concentrated setting.  Perhaps I could flood them out.  After dark, when wasps tend to be the least active, I snuck out, set up my hose, and sprayed the nest.  Some wasps staggered out, apparently unsure of what was going on.  A few fell.  But the nest held.

I had had enough.  I couldn’t spray them while they were up high, so I resolved to take the nest down by any means.  Last night was going to be the final battle.  I took out my roof rake – usually used to remove snow from my roof during the winter – and assembled it outside.  Then I grabbed the spray and headed to the nest.  Once I was in position, I used the roof rake to knock it down and sprayed like crazy.

Hopefully, this will prevent the wasps from returning.  I might be kind to creatures in general, but when it comes to an insect that could possibly sting my child, I go to war.

Kermit Potter

Kermit Potter and the Mashup of MuppetsThe other day, we were driving and the subject of NHL’s birthday party came up.  He had wanted a Muppets themed party, but switched awhile back to Harry Potter (inspired, no doubt, by the fact that we’re reading the series together).  Then, when the difficulty of making Harry Potter cupcakes became apparent, he reverted back to Muppets.

As we went back and forth, I jokingly suggested putting Harry Potter glasses on the Kermit cupcakes to make Kermit Potter.  We laughed and then ran with the idea.  Mrs. Piggy would have to be Hermione Granger, of course.  Slightly hapless, but well meaning Ron Weasley would be best played by Fozzie Bear.  Meanwhile, completely hopeless Neville Longbottom would have Beaker taking his place.  Hagrid was an easy pick: Sweetums (the large, brown, hairy Muppet perhaps best remembered for running after the other Muppets in The Muppet Movie after being mistakenly left behind).

We couldn’t decide on who should play Voldemort, but I voted for Gonzo.  (He’s done villains before since he’s Darth Vader in the Muppets Star Wars sets that Disney sells.)  Of course, he’d be Weirdomort with a huge shnozz instead of serpent-like slits.  As we debated this, NHL had a stroke of genius.  The Dementors, he declared, should be Gonzo’s chickens.  (Instead of the Dementor’s Kiss, the Cluckmentor’s Peck?)  Mind you, NHL is still on Prisoner of Azkaban so he doesn’t know how the Dementors will align with Voldemort.

We’re still conflicted who Dumbledore should be.  Jim Henson is a big possibility, but I think he should be a Muppet figure.  It would have to be a "wise" figure to which Harry…. I mean Kermit Potter goes to for help.  Maybe Dr. Bunsen Honeydew?

The identity of Severus Snape was another problem until I stumbled upon a site that did their own Muppet-Harry Potter mashup.  (Sadly, I’ve lost the link to that site.)  Snape is a proud individual who sees himself as better than rabble like Harry and his friends.  Thus, Sam the American Eagle is perfect for the job.  Lupid was an easy pick: Rowlf the dog.  For Dobby the House Elf, we chose Rizzo the Rat.  Finally, Professor Trelawney was thought of as the Swedish Chef (even though he’d be playing a female character), but then I figured that Janice would be a better fit.

What Muppet would you cast in a Muppet-Harry Potter mashup and as which Harry Potter character?
