Weekly thoughts:  Last weekend, we had quite a big snowfall.  While I did as much shoveling as I could on Sunday, there was still more to do on Monday.  So I spent 45 minutes shoveling us out.  I decided to count this as a workout more formally than I did last week.  On Wednesday, I attempted the 10 minute Advanced Hula Hoop workout.  3,323 spins later, I could hardly stand.  I think I’ll be sticking to the 6 minute version for awhile.  I’ve also come to the realization that I’ve got to set a firmer time to workout.  Too many nights, I wait until 11:15pm and then reluctantly pull the balance board out.  I get into the workout quickly, but I need to schedule it to get me over the "do I really want to lug the balance board out/maybe I’ll just check one more thing/it’s so late now" hump.

So Proud Of NHL and My Nephew

Last night, we had our traditional Christmas meal: Chinese food.  First, we ate out at a Chinese buffet.  After engorging ourselves on Chinese food (and sushi!  yay!), we stopped by a CVS that we saw was open on the way to the restaurant.  We walked through the aisles casually shopping.  The store’s manager came over and wished us a Merry Christmas.  Normally, this is where B or I reply "Happy Chanukah" to gently inform the person that we don’t celebrate Christmas.  It’s not that we’re highly offended.  It’s more of a reminder that December isn’t solely Christmas territory.  For whatever reason – full bellies or the nice way he said it – we decided not to respond in our usual manner.

NHL, however, replied: "Happy Chanukah.  We don’t celebrate Christmas.  We celebrate Chanukah."  I was so proud of him at that moment.

Then he proceeded to inform the manager that we were heading home now to light the candles ("Have Chanukah" in NHL’s terminology).  Then he decended into "stream of consciousness talk" where anything that popped into his head came out of his mouth without any regard for other people lacking the references NHL was making.  We were leaving by this point and tried to keep NHL quiet on the way out.  The manager was nice and didn’t seem annoyed by NHL’s ramblings.

After we got home, I called my parents to see how they are doing.  When I told him about the CVS event, he told me about something my nephew did.  Apparently, he told my sister to light a fire in the fireplace just in case Santa came down their chimney.  When I was a kid, I’d do the same thing.  I knew Santa wasn’t real, but just in case he was and just in case he mistook our household for one that celebrated Christmas, I wanted to "inform" him that we didn’t.  I guess I wasn’t one for subtly.

We don’t have a chimney/fireplace in our house, so we won’t be carrying on this tradition at home.  I don’t know if my sister told him the story or if he came up with it on his own.  In either case, I’m so proud of my nephew for carrying on a Christmas tradition.

A Green Tip For You – Receipt Printing

I was speaking to a coworker and mentioned something I do with receipts from online purchases.  He seemed to think that it was a great idea.  It just seemed so second nature to me that I didn’t even realize that people might not know about it.  Given that this holiday season brings many online purchases, I figured that it would be a good tip to share.  (Ok, most of you have probably bought everything you’re going to buy online for the holiday season, humor me on this point, ok?  )

What you will need:

  • PDFCreator – PDFCreator is a free, open-source application that can create PDF files from any file that you can print.  It fools your system into thinking that there is printer called PDFCreator.  When documents (Word files, web pages, photos, etc) are printed to this "printer", they don’t emerge on paper but are saved to a PDF file.  Since it is free, you can install it on all of your computers without paying a single penny.

The Green Tip:

Upon completing an online purchase, you’ll usually be presented with a receipt for your purchase.  Many would print this receipt out to have onhand in case they need it, but this can waste paper.  Instead, I print the receipt to PDF.  To make it easier to find, I put all of my receipts in a folder (appropriately called "Receipts") and name the PDF files in a way that I’ll remember what they were for.  e.g. "2008-12-23 – Amazon.com – Another Good Book.pdf"  Then, if I ever need to find my receipt, I simply open the cooresponding PDF file.  I haven’t yet needed to print a receipt out, but if I need to, they’ll all be there as good as new while a receipt printed at the time of sale can fade, tear, or get lost.  I don’t know offhand how many trees I’ve saved by not printing out my receipts, but every little bit counts.

Weekly thoughts: First of all, I’m paring this down to a weekly thoughts instead of a daily thoughts since I might not have anything significant to say about a certain day’s workout.  That said, you’ll notice that there are only 3 workouts here.  One of them (Sunday’s) was a makeup for the previous week’s skipped workout.  Wednesday and Thursday, I  wound up skipping my workouts as well.  On Wednesday, I skipped my workout due to being exhausted.  Thursday, B and her parents took NHL to see Disney On Ice.  I stayed home with JSL and was too tired afterwards to workout.

We had an extremely snowy weekend, however.  I did at least an hour of combined snow shoveling and "wintertime running with weights" (also known as pulling kids on a sled while running up and down a snowy block) on Saturday.  On Sunday, I did at least a half hour of shoveling.  So I’m counting those as my missed workouts.
